Uzbekistan Samarkand Cemeteries:Shah Zand is also called Shahr -i-Zendah or Shah-i- Zendeh.
First means the city of living people and latter translates the living king. But it is originally called after Shah-Zand Quasem Ibn-Abbas,a cousin of Prophet Mohammad who brought Islam to the region and was buried there. Except Shah Zand Mausoleum and few other early tombs, the rest belong to Timur's & Ulughbek's familly and favorites. Timur's niece mausoleum, the second on the left after the entry is the masterpiece of Islamic tile work. Afrasiab Cemetery It is located outside Shah Zand Mausoleum above the hill facing Bibi Khanym Mosque and view of Samarkand is in the background. It is a mix of Muslim and Russian graves and stretches for more than one kilometer to the North along Ak. Abdullayev Street.
